The "Mother Road", Route 66 was featured in John Steinbeck's, The Grapes of Wrath, and later a movie of the same name. The trip of flight from the depression dust bowl to the promise of "golden" California is a true classic view of the depression era. Later the unifying thread in the popular 1960-64 television series, Route 66, it was the setting for many hour-long dramas as actors Martin Milner and George Maharis traveled across the U.S.A. in a red Corvette. Today bypassed by the Interstate Highway System it remains a living and rich history yielding insights into the changes in middle America over the last 70 years. Traveling the "old" highway today is far more interesting and visually stimulating than following Interstate Highway 40, with its "superhighway monotony.

In 1797 Thomas James moved to Chillicothe, Ohio to explore the business of manufacturing iron. Around that time he hired Samuel Massey (1825) as a superintendent of his iron works, a group of Shawnee Indians who were on their way to see "the Great White Father", (Pres. John Quincy Adams) requested permission to camp on James's land.

THE MERAMEC RIVER THAT FLOWS THROUGH MERAMEC SPRINGS.

Thomas visited with the Indians and recognizing their ceremonial paint as an agent of iron ore, persuaded the grateful Indians to take him to the place they talked about; which was the source of the iron ore.

As Subtle As Neon: Motel Signs of the Southwest By Douglas C. Towne Article from Sign Builders Illustrated; May/June 1998

For some, the allure is elicited by the names that glow in the darkness as if drawn with a magical luminous pen: Vista del Sol, Desert Moon, Blue Angel, Lucky Cuss, Kiva, Sky Ranch - all monikers designed to stir the imagination. Others attract by employing larger-than-life, iridescent figures that slowly flicker in the twilight, then spring forth with life. Galloping horses pull the careening Butterfield Stage along the wagon road, its wheels spinning wildly in the night. Voluptuous blonde damsels swan dive fearlessly into swimming pools from death-defying heights. With golden kinetic lassos, wranglers impress greenhorns with clever rope tricks. Mounted Indian warriors relentlessly rain crimson arrows on a lone Pony Express rider. Burros, with flicking ears and swishing tails, clamor for attention, while motionless owls thoughtfully study their surroundings through pince-nez. Burning brightly in the night, these names and figures serve as neon signs advertising motels along Route 66 and other highways of the pre-interstate era which traverse the arid landscape of the American Southwest.

The 66 DINER is dedicated to preserving the spirit of the roadside diner along ROUTE 66. Our recipes come from Mom and Dad, brothers, sisters, friends and neighbors (except for Ernie's liver and onion recipe. . . which he forced on us). Our food is always fresh and always the absolute best we can offer. If you have a tastier recipe, bring it in and let us try it! If we decide we like yours better, we'll put it on the menu (we're not proud) and we'll treat you and three of your friends to dinner. Our food, service and decor are all a very special part of the homage we pay to a vanishing part of America's history - ROUTE 66.
